Naturopathy at Renuv Med spa Wellness center in Feasterville Lower Bucks County Pa 19053

What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is a system of medicine based on the healing power of nature. Naturopathy is a holistic system, meaning that naturopathic doctors (N.D.s) strive to find the cause of disease by understanding the body, mind, and spirit of the person. Most naturopathic doctors use a variety of therapies and techniques (such as nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and acupuncture).

There are two areas of focus in naturopathy: one is supporting the body’s own healing abilities, and the other is empowering people to make lifestyle changes necessary for the best possible health. While naturopathic doctors treat both short bouts of illness and chronic conditions, their emphasis is on preventing disease and educating patients.

What is the history of naturopathy?

The modern form of naturopathy can be traced to 18th- and 19th-century natural healing systems. Such systems include hydrotherapy (water therapy), which was popular in Germany and nature cure, developed in Austria, based on the use of food, air, light, water, and herbs to treat illness.

Benjamin Lust, a German immigrant, first introduced naturopathy to the United States in 1902 when he founded the American School of Naturopathy. The school emphasized the use of natural cures, proper bowel habits, and good hygiene as the tools for health. This was the first time that principles of a healthy diet, like increasing fiber intake and reducing saturated fats, became popular.

In the mid-1920s to 1940, the use of naturopathic medicine declined. It was not until the 1960s that naturopathic-style holistic medicine became popular again. Today, naturopaths are licensed care providers in many states. They offer a variety of natural therapies, including homeopathy, vitamin and mineral supplements, Traditional Chinese Medicine, relaxation techniques, and herbal remedies.

Some of the more common treatments used by a naturopath include:

  • Nutritional counseling
  • Herbal medicine
  • Homeopathic medicine
  • Acupuncture
  • Hydrotherapy (water therapy) – These therapies include drinking natural spring water, taking baths, alternating hot and cold applications, and water exercise, all of which are thought to stimulate healing and strengthen the immune system.
  • Physical medicine — This natural approach to healing involves using touch, hot and cold compresses, electric currents, and sound waves to manipulate the muscles, bones, and spine.
  • Detoxification — This therapy removes toxins from the body by fasting, using enemas, and drinking lots of water.
  • Spirituality — Personal spiritual development is encouraged as part of an overall health program.
  • Lifestyle and psychological counseling — An N.D. may use hypnosis, guided imagery, or other counseling methods as part of a treatment plan.

Naturopaths consider patients to be participants in their health care, so you may be asked to make lifestyle changes (such as changing your sleeping, eating, and exercise habits).

Because naturopaths combine so many therapies, it is difficult to single out specific illnesses that respond well to naturopathy. Naturopaths treat both acute and chronic conditions from arthritis to ear infections (otitis media), from HIV to asthma, from congestive heart failure to hepatitis. N.D.s treat the whole person (rather than only treating a disease or its symptoms), aiming to help their patients maintain a balanced state of good health. Because of this holistic approach, naturopathy may be especially suited for treating chronic illnesses.

Acupuncture at Renuv Medspa Wellness center Feasterville Lower Bucks county Pa 19053

Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting and manipulating needles into various very precise acupuncture points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes. This  is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. t .

The earliest written record of acupuncture is the Chinese  with elaboration of its history in the second century BC medical text . The practice of acupuncture can perhaps be traced in China as far back as the Stone Age, some chronic afflictions being treated with  sharpened stones . One explanation was that some of the soldiers in the war who were afflicted with arrows got cured without any treatment. Different variations of acupuncture are practiced and taught throughout the world.

The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others.

The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.

The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system.

The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Acupuncture gained attention in the United States during  President Richard Nixon’s visit to China in 1972. In one part of the visit, the delegation was shown a patient undergoing major surgery while fully awake, ostensibly receiving acupuncture rather than conventional anesthesia . Later it was found that the patients selected for the surgery had  received heavy indoctrination before the operation.

Medical acupuncture is a system which can influence three areas of health care:

  • promotion of health and well-being,
  • prevention of illness,
  • treatment of various medical conditions.

While acupuncture is often associated with pain control, in the hands of a well-trained practitioner it has much broader applications. Acupuncture can be effective as the only treatment used, or as the support or adjunct to other medial treatment forms in many medical and surgical disorders. The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:

  • Digestive disorders: gastritis and hyperacidity, spastic colon, constipation, diarrhea.
  • Respiratory disorders: sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, recurrent chest infections.
  • Neurological and muscular disorders: headaches, facial tics, neck pain, rib neuritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, various forms of tendinitis, low back pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis.
  • Urinary, menstrual, and reproductive problems.

Acupuncture is particularly useful in resolving physical problems related to tension and stress and emotional conditions.

The number of treatments needed differs from person to person. For complex or long-standing conditions, one or two treatments a week for several months may be recommended.

Usually acupuncutre procedure does not cause any pain. As energy is redirected in the body, internal chemicals and hormones are stimulated and healing begins to takeplace. Occasionally the original symptoms worsen for a few days, or other general changes in appetite, sleep, bowel or urination patterns, or emotional state may be triggered. These should not cause concern, as they are simply indications that the acupuncture is starting to work. It is quite common with the first one or two treatments to have a sensation of deep relaxation or even mild disorientation immediately following the treatment. These pass within a short time, and never require anything more than a bit of rest to overcome.

Weight Reduction in Renuv Med Spa in Feasterville, Lower Bucks County, Pa 19053

October 5th, 2010

Weight reduction  is one method of  keeping oneself attractive and healthy. You would ask, “Why is weight reduction important?” excess weight is not only unsightly but disease forming. It is the root cause of chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure ,cardiovascular diseases ,arthritis , arteriosclerosis,  which could cause severe  health hazards and complications. Increased weight can also lead to insulin resistance .

What is insulin resistance?

When we eat carbohydrates,  Insulin is released  from the pancreas gland to burn the carbohydrate  load.  In normal people more  the dietary  carbohydrate , there is  increased  secretion of Insulin in the body to burn that load of carbohydrate. But in people with  Insulin resistance , then  cells have increasing difficulty responding to insulin .  So the pancreas has to  releases more insulin in an attempt to override the resistance. In the end pancreas gets exhausted and can’t produce enough insulin to accomplish this goal. As a result, blood glucose levels rise leading to diabetes.  The  excess  blood glucose gets stored as body fat. More  insulin resistance, more fatty cells .
✦ Increased weight can lead to other serious complications
People who are overweight or obese have a higher risk for more than 30 other diseases and conditions besides above mentioned , like  Cancer , Stroke and  Breathing problems

Being overweight  causes  low energy levels making  people  get easily  tired. When you get tired easily, you would not be able to be productive at work, at home or at school.

Shirodhara at Renuv Medspa Wellness center in Lower Bucks county, Feasterville ,Pa. 19053

August 31st, 2010

Shirodhara is a luxuriant and easy way to achieve instant calm and rejuvenation. It derives from two Sanskrit words: shiro and dhara. Shiro means head and dhara means  stream . It involves the warm and consistent stream of  oil on the forehead, in between the eyebrows, specifically on the ‘third eye’ area. This is the ” Ajna chakra ” point . It is said to be the seat of human consciousness. The oil  is allowed to flow over the scalp and through the hair, creating a blissful sensation. Even though in most cases  sesame oil is used, Shirodhara can also be performed with other oils or warm water or milk.

Practiced for over 5000 years, shirodhara massage originates from Ayurvedic medicine of India and  aims to harmonize the body, mind, senses and soul.

Ayurveda may be an ancient Indian therapy but its appeal is thoroughly modern. This holistic system of diet, herbal remedies and massage has been a big hit all over the world with people who are  looking to regain a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

As the warm oil flows down the scalp ,all your mental demons – fear, anxiety, anger or irritability – dissolve into an ocean of calm as your mind is lulled into a state of serenity and expanded consciousness.

This treatment which is very popular in NY city and on the west coast is offered  in Renuv med spa and wellness center,in a tranquil and comfortable environment with  background music of a calming sea and a soft treatment table.

Lying on your back  , your head will be positioned under the oil ‘fountain’ – a copper vessel with a slow-flowing spout from which the oils will stream gently onto the forehead.

As the oil strokes the third eye, it has a balancing effect on the deepest recesses of the brain, stimulating the endocrine glands namely the pituitary gland and hypothalamus  and the flow of endorphins. The procedure is also said to synchronize alpha brain waves, enhancing blood circulation to the brain, improving mental clarity and generally releasing deeply trapped ama, or toxins.

After the oil flow is finished, you are then left for a few minutes to relax and assimilate the experience of a heightened state of awareness and a long-lasting sense of peace .

Shirodhara truly honors the body as a sacred temple and a vehicle for the divine spirit within.

A client who is hooked on  this treatment likens it to a ” velvety hand of God caressing my forehead!!”

Dermaplaning at Renuv Med Spa Wellness Center in Feasterville,Lower Bucks County Pa19053

August 4th, 2010

Dermaplaning or Blading as it is popularly called, removes the outer most layers of dead skin cells leaving the skin immediately smooth, supple and vibrant.  Dermaplaning is another non-traumatic method of skin rejuvenation.

This procedure is safely performed by using a #10 sterile surgical blade, which is held against the skin at a 45 degree angle and stroked along the skin, just like shaving.  The esthetician while  doing the stroking is holding the area of skin taut.

This treatment is extremely safe in trained hands.  There is no more risk to the skin than when a man shaves his face.

There are two types of hair that grow on our bodies.  Vellous (tiny translucent blond hair) and Terminal (thicker hair that grows under the arms, pubic area, eye brows, mustache and beard for men and legs)

Vellous hair when cut or removed will grow back the same.  The structure of the hair  is impossible to alter.  Terminal hair is physiologically coarse.  When Terminal hair is cut, it grows back the same way…coarse.

Sometimes, waxing can make the hair appear to be “thinner” but it is really not thinner at all.  Because waxing pulls the hair from it’s roots, the new hair grows in with a smooth tip, making it feel softer.  But it is actually the same type of hair it was before.  It’s only when we cut hair (any type of hair) that the hair grows back with a blunt cut at the tip.

Dermaplaning can be performed every 3 – 4 weeks.  It actually removes about 2-3 weeks worth of dead skin cells.  We want the skin to complete it’s normal skin cycle of approximately 30 days.

All skin types can benefit from dermaplaning or blading, however, this is  not recommended for those suffering from acne and an over production of the sebaceous gland.  The oils from the sebaceous gland need to travel up and connect with the vellous hair. (Vellous hair does not have oil/sebaceous glands)  If the hair is removed, then the oils tend to stay below where they are prone to mix with bacterial colonies, ultimately stimulating more acne.

Dermaplaning can be performed with a chemical peel which are made without harsh chemicals that might induce a burn effect on the skin.  such as lactic acid.

At Renuv med-spa and wellness center , located in Feasterville, Bucks county ,Pa we have a skin service called ” triple peel ” which is the combination of  dermaplaning, microdermabrasion followed by lactic acid peel .

I personally favor this peel over all the other peels and microdermabrasion since it is 3 in 1 skin treatment.

This service falls under anti aging & beauty enhancement.

Microdermabrasion at Renuv Med Spa Wellness Center in Feasterville , Lower Bucks County, Pa19053

August 4th, 2010

Microdermabrasion (often referred to as Microderm) is a procedure  popular in  medical spas ( Med spas ) and doctor’s offices  in which  dead outermost layer of the  skin  ( called as  stratum corneum )  is partially or completely removed by light abrasion.

Microdermabrasion is a simple, straight forward, non-invasive procedure that revitalizes dull skin, removes sun-damaged skin, reduces large pores, erases fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, reduces mild pigment irregularities (hyperpigmentation), stretch marks and age spots.

The procedure is not very painful and requires no anesthetic. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars. There is some  evidence that microdermabrasion stimulates formation of collagen. Microdermabrasion  can be used for treatment of acne, but must be repeated periodically to be effective.

Microdermabrasion has virtually no risks and no side effects because it is one of the least invasive skin resurfacing procedures. Contraindications, however, do exist. Patients on Accutane for 6 months previously, pregnant and nursing women, people suffering from active herpes lesions, malignant tumors, keratosis, active rosacea or weeping acne should not have microdermbrasion procedure.

Different methods include mechanical abrasion from jets of zinc oxide or aluminum oxide crystals, fine organic particles, or a roughened surface. Particles are removed with a wand/handpiece through which the abrasive particles come. Crystal microdermabrasion systems are the traditional treatment of choice and rely on tiny crystals that are blasted onto the skin to perform the exfoliating process. At Renuv med-spa and wellness center , located in Feasterville, Bucks county ,Pa we use aluminum oxide crystals

The key factor in achieving the desired results is having the treatment performed by a qualified and well trained esthetician.

Actual results, however, depend on prior medical conditions, your skin’s ability to recover and on who performed the procedure. It is not effective on severe skin imperfections because microdermabrasion cannot reach deeper layers of skin.

In a nutshell Microdermabrasion is a simple yet effective procedure to improve your skin and must be repeated every 2 to 6 weeks for a period of time for excellent results.

This service falls under anti aging and beauty enhancement category.

Facial Peels at Renuv Med Spa Wellness Center in Feasterville, Lower Bucks County Pa 19053

August 4th, 2010

A  facial peel is a cosmetic treatment that can be performed at a  spa , med sap or doctor’s office to help lessen the appearance of age spots, blemishes, acne scarring, and any number of other skin irregularities on the face. Also called chemical peels, facial peels can improve the appearance of fine lines  and give new life to sun-damaged skin.

Chemical peel products are made up of different acid solutions that typically have skin exfoliating properties. These peels are applied to the face, neck, hands, and other body parts where improvement of the skin is desired. The acids in these products are meant to cause a controlled burn to the skin so that the outer layers of the  skin can peel away and reveal newer, fresher skin underneath. Chemical peel products can generally be classified into three groups based on the severity of the burns that they typically cause: superficial, medium, and deep peels.

Superficial peels are usually composed of alphahydroxy acids, such as varying concentrations of  glycolic acid  and  lactic acids. These chemical peel products are the mildest kind and are generally suitable for all skin types. They are usually used to improve skin texture and may sometimes be mixed with a bleaching agent to even out pigmentation.

The process of getting a superficial peel done should generally last no more than ten minutes. Afterward, most people are immediately able to return to their normal activities. The skin may turn pink or red, much like a mild sunburn, but makeup can be used to cover it up. Peeling that occurs is usually minimal and should end within five days.

Medium peels penetrate deeper than superficial peels and generally cause second-degree burns. The acid most often used for medium peels is trichloroacetic acid (TCA). These peels may be used to treat fine lines and skin discolorations. Deep peels are the harshest skin peels, typically penetrating several layers of skin and causing second-degree burns. These peels are usually done in the  dermatologists office.

People who have any type of chemical peel product applied should typically avoid sun exposure while their skin is peeling. Once peeling is complete, it is generally advised that people apply  sunscreen every day and stay out of the sun as much as possible. New skin is at greater risk for sun damage and discoloration.

Generally speaking, a professional peel will remove more layers of skin, thereby removing or at least lessening the appearance of deeper and darker blemishes. The procedure is most successful with superficial skin marks and scarring; those with deep scarring or large patches of dark pigmentation are not good candidates for a chemical peel. These facial peel procedures are also effective in reducing wrinkles without having to undergo a complete  facelift.

There are some risks involved with having a chemical facial peel. Some of the chemicals used in facial peels can cause bleaching of the skin, and there is a slight risk of infection and even scarring. After a chemical peel, the skin will appear red and swollen, and feel tender to the touch. Scabs may form as well, since layers of the skin are burned off with the chemicals. Normally these side-effects will resolve themselves after a few days, but with very deep facial peels the recovery time is much longer.

At Renuv med-spa and wellness center , located in Feasterville, Bucks county ,Pa we use different grades of Glycolic  acid and lactic acid for facial peels.

This service falls in the category of beauty enhancement and anti aging.
